Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the most celebrated Sherlock Holmes mysteries, blending gothic atmosphere with clever detective work. The story begins when Dr Mortimer seeks Holmes’s help after the sudden and mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville on the mist covered moors of Devon. Local legend claims that a supernatural hound has haunted the Baskerville family for generations, bringing death to its heirs. With Sir Henry Baskerville soon to inherit the estate, Mortimer fears the curse may strike again.

Holmes sends Dr Watson to accompany Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall, instructing him to observe every detail of the moor and its inhabitants. Watson becomes immersed in the eerie landscape, encountering suspicious neighbours, strange sounds across the moor and unsettling clues that hint at both human schemes and something far more sinister. His letters to Holmes reveal a growing sense of danger surrounding Sir Henry.

As the mystery deepens, Watson discovers a hidden figure living on the moor and uncovers secrets that connect several residents to the Baskerville legacy. When Holmes unexpectedly arrives, he reveals that he has been secretly investigating from the shadows. Together, Holmes and Watson unravel a plot driven by greed, deception and long buried family ties.

The terrifying hound, far from being a supernatural creature, is exposed as a trained animal used to create fear and disguise a calculated murder plan. Holmes confronts the culprit in a dramatic climax on the moor, saving Sir Henry from the same fate as his uncle.

The Hound of the Baskervilles remains a classic of British literature, known for its atmospheric setting, intricate plotting and the enduring partnership of Holmes and Watson.
