Arabian Nights, also known as One Thousand and One Nights, is a celebrated collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories passed down through centuries of oral and written tradition. The tales are framed by the story of Shahrazad, a brilliant and courageous young woman who volunteers to marry King Shahryar. The king, embittered by betrayal, has vowed to execute each new bride after one night. To save herself and the women of the kingdom, Shahrazad devises a plan that relies on the power of storytelling.

On their wedding night, she begins an enthralling tale but stops at a moment of suspense. The king, eager to hear the ending, spares her life for another day. Night after night, Shahrazad continues this pattern, weaving stories filled with adventure, romance, magic and moral lessons. Her narratives include famous characters such as Aladdin, Ali Baba and Sinbad the Sailor, though not all versions of the collection contain these particular tales.

The stories range from heroic quests and enchanted creatures to clever tricksters and dramatic encounters with fate. Themes of justice, loyalty, courage and transformation run throughout the collection. Shahrazad’s storytelling not only captivates the king but gradually softens his heart, leading him to abandon his vow and recognise her wisdom and compassion.

The frame narrative and the tales within it highlight the enduring power of imagination and the importance of empathy. Over time, Arabian Nights has become one of the most influential works in world literature, inspiring countless adaptations and interpretations.
